There is so much to discuss about Drew Belcher. The most impressive aspect is his mental toughness and character and at the end of the day that is the most important trait to possess to succeed in life.
He was the starting quarterback at Maine but a new coaching staff and offensive philosophy forced him out from under center to tight end. A typical response would be to possibly transfer or sulk about losing the starting job, but not Belcher. He got to work and with one week before the first game his junior season he was playing tight end. Doing it well!
Prior to switching positions, he was winning weight-room team awards from the quarterback spot. He emerged as a team captain his senior season. Those accolades show the residue of success that has allowed Belcher to emerge as a late-round draft selection or priority free agent in this up-coming draft.
That mental toughness was tested again this off-season with the passing of his father unexpectedly. Belcher once again was placed in an unusual set of circumstances but showed the grit and determination at his Pro Day performance at Boston College.
His forty time (4.65) would place him fourth overall with the tight ends at the NFL Combine. The 16 reps on the bench press tie him for 14th for those invited to Indianapolis. A huge number considering his quarterback background and developing him frame for the rigors of tight end and playing along the line of scrimmage. Under immense stress, Belcher shined at the Pro Day. His Pro Day sent NFL Scouts back to the film room now knowing the athleticism is there.
This kid is athletic and versatile. Takes to coaching extremely well again showing toughness and leadership. When he played quarterback, he was a dual-threat type guy possibly running the football 15-20 times a game. Belcher was used in a variety of ways in Maine’s offensive scheme once he moved to tight end. A good indicator of his versatility and football IQ. A little raw and not battled tested against the likes of NFL caliber defenders. He is a development type prospect with upside. A quick learner.
Belcher has a real positive vibe as the draft nears. Making an impact in camp and notching a Practice Squad spot is totally a legit outcome.
