Grace has 13 sacks in 26 games played

In just 26 games, Mi’Quise Grace has transformed from a promising recruit to one of the most versatile defensive ends in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Grace’s play is characterized by a rare blend of speed, power, and football intelligence, making him a constant threat on the field.
Originally a running back in high school at Princeton High in Cincinnati, he underwent a major growth spurt that shifted him to defensive end.
“Probably my junior year after Covid,” Grace said was the moment he knew carrying the football was going to transition into tackling the ball carrier. “I had a growth spurt. They said (Coaches) it’s probably better if you move to outside linebacker like a hybrid.”
The body grew and so has his big play ability. Known for his athleticism and ability to read the game, Grace has also recorded several sacks and pass breakups, showcasing his versatility and defensive skill. This is not a one trick pony. He’s growing into the complete package. Able to create havoc behind the line of scrimmage and drop in coverage.
His adaptability allows him to switch seamlessly between defending the run, rushing the passer, and dropping back into coverage. As South Dakota’s opponents have discovered, Grace is equally likely to break through the offensive line as he is to disrupt passing lanes, making him a unique asset for his team.
Recently, Grace has noticed a shift in how offenses approach him.
“Some teams are starting to chip and slow me up,” Grace remarked, referencing the added attention he now faces from offensive coordinators who meticulously plan to keep No. 90 in check.
This respect from opponents is a testament to Grace’s relentless work ethic and dedication to his craft. Coaches and teammates alike praise Grace for his commitment, spending countless hours watching game tape and refining his techniques to stay a step ahead. His progress has not only boosted South Dakota’s defense but has also established him as one of the most dynamic defensive ends to watch in the conference.
Building on a strong 2023 campaign, where he posted 34 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss, and four quarterback hurries in 13 games, Grace has elevated his performance to another level in 2024.
Through just 10 games, Grace has already surpassed his totals from last season. He leads the Coyotes in tackles for loss (14), quarterback hurries (9), and fumbles forced and recovered (two each). He is second on the team in sacks with 7.5, trailing only a standout senior defensive lineman Nick Gaes.
Since joining South Dakota, he’s adjusted well to his new position, making impactful plays, including a memorable 56-yard fumble return for a touchdown in a playoff game against Sacramento State, last season. Grace duplicated the feat against South Dakota State with another fumble return for a touchdown this from 16-yards from paydirt.
“Honestly, a lot of people tell me I have good athleticism,” Grace said. “It’s also preparation. How you look at the game. How you get ready for the game. I put a lot into my preparation.”
Grace’s consistent ability to disrupt plays in the backfield and force turnovers has been instrumental in the Coyotes’ defensive dominance this season.
With 13 career sacks in 26 games, I felt it was only fitting to know his favorite sack move to get to the quarterback.
“I probably say a “Ghost Rush”, Grace said.
The way he has been playing he has offenses seeing ghosts.
