McTyer originally arrived at UNLV to play receiver. His versatility allowed him to switch to defensive back to help the Rebels defense one day before fall camp prior to embarking into his collegiate career. McTyer has exceptional speed along with NFL pedigree. His father (Tim McTyer) played defensive in the NFL from 1997-99.

He possesses good size and speed to mirror receivers. Very strong pound for pound and finished fifth on the team in tackles (49). Led the team in interceptions (2016) with three and finished tied for fourth with 3.5 tackles for loss. He likes to hit and is quick to support the run. McTyer knows his assignments and does his job.

In addition to defensive back, he also was impact kick return weapon for Rebels special teams unit. He finished with 20 returns for 384 yards for a 19.2 average per return. If his Pro Day performance meets anticipated expectations, McTyer surely will garner more attention leading up to NFL Draft.
