Struggles with ACT scores leaving high school and had some D1 offers that included Houston while Kevin Sumlin was head coach. Eventually landed at Eastern Arizona (JUCO) and thrived as All-American. Was committed to going to Tennessee when Derrick Dooley was head coach, but once again NCAA regulations derailed the SEC opportunity. Transcript issues forced Butler to the D2 level.
Butler moves well for his size and has that tempo setting mentality. Moves well in a straight line and will deliver impact hits. His angle to the football and ability to stay clean are strong points to his game. Good open field tackler. Quickly has feel for where the football is going. Short-area burst. Limited in coverage and lacks quick hips more of a straight line prospect. Shows some nasty in his play. Plays downhill and can react quickly off the ball. Likely viewed as a very athletic and explosive, but undersized ‘Mike’ linebacker.
